China Backstreets Episode 1 - Beijing - Shilipu Neighborhood

This episode explores inside a Beijing housing block beyond the famous traditional Hutongs that surround the Forbidden City. This neighborhood block was built during the days before China opened to the West and is filled with long-time residents.

We briefly explore this community in the south east of Beijing.

China Backstreets Episode 2 - Beijing - SiHui Fruit Vendor

Roadsides in China are often lined with vendors filled with entrepreneurial spirit. This particular fruit vendor has gone from selling a meager stock from the back of her tricycle to a shiny pickup truck. She and her husband have prospered by long connection and constant cheerful attitude. But the life is not always easy. They face the elements, long hours, difficult customers and sometimes - the unexpected. We followed one fruit vendor in the Sihui area in the southeast of Beijing.

Production notes: This was shot on the consumer-friendly, but low-end pro Sony NEX-vg-10. It is a light portable and relatively cheap full HD camera with simple controls, adequate features and a really very nice built in stereo microphone.
